The History of the Beautiful Square
The square was designed by J.A. Nering in 1688; this was originally known with its name Linen Markt, which was changed to Neuer Mark or Friedrichstadtischer Markt. However, because this market was occupied by a cuirassier regiment known as “gens d ‘arms” since 1736 to 1782 with complete sentry stables and boxes, its name was officially changed into Gendarmenmarkt.

Französischer Dom or French Cathedral
This cathedral, Französischer, was constructed from 1701 to 1705 according to the designs of Cayart. The name of this church was made due to the influence of Huguenot community here in Berlin. By coming here, you will see with your own eyes the imposing tower of the Französischer Dom, which was added to the design of Unger and Gontard as part of the redesigning of the beautiful square after it was damaged by the Second World War.
Deutscher Dom or German Cathedral
This is another cathedral that was beautifully erected in the vicinity of the beautiful square. This is the product of the ingenuity of Giovanni Simonetti and M. Grunberg.
The previous construction of this cathedral looks differently the way it appears now. But certainly, its new construction will look more attractive in your eyes as compared to its design before. The first thing that will capture your eyes is the domed tower, which was designed by Carl von Gontard as an extension of the building when the beautiful square was redesigned along with Französischer Dom.
Konzerthaus or Schauspielhaus
This is the newest building among the three, which was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel s a replacement to the Nationaltheater. The construction of this building includes the remnants of the rectangular building of Langhan. When you go to Gendarmenmarkt to see this, don’t expect to see a theater but a concert hall instead in this edifice.
